Farm animals story time is a theme that you can use year-round, but I like to do it during the fall. Many children are visiting apple farms or pumpkin farms during the fall so they’re familiar with the idea of farms. It’s also a nice theme to use if you want an alternative to Halloween story times during the fall.
Books I Read
Amara’s Farm by Ja-Nay Brown Wood & Samara Hardy
Down on the Farm by Merrily Kutner & Will Hillenbrand
I really like how the phrase, “Down on the farm,” is repeated throughout the book. I introduced it to the children before reading the book and had them practice saying it when I pointed at them. Then, each time it appeared in the book, I had them say it for me. They really enjoyed doing that!
Piggies in the Pumpkin Patch by Mary Peterson and Jennifer Rofe
Spot Goes to the Farm by Eric Hill
Songs I Sang
The Animals on the Farm
Five Little Ducks
I like to sing the version by Raffi. I also made some laminated ducks to use with my flannelboard.
I’ve Got a Cat On My Knee
Old MacDonald Had a Farm
Old MacDonald Had a Farm is always fun one because most kids know it and they love doing the animals sounds. It’s also a useful song to do at the end of a story time if you need to use up a few extra minutes. Just add a few extra animals / verses and you’ve got a fun, easy way to extend story time a few minutes.
